Vancity’s Shocking Truth


Socially progressive. Democratic. Values-based: That’s what Vancity used to stand for and it’s the image they continue to project. But what’s lurking behind the squeaky-clean brand this credit union has built for itself?  

Vancity workers, who are also Vancity members, can tell you firsthand that their credit union is not living up to the “progressive employee relations” it claims to value. What has Vancity done? 

  • Denied workers a say over their own retirement money - apparently modeling co-op ideals stops at staff! 
  • Refused fair wages.
  • In one fell swoop, dropped 200 pink slips into staff inboxes!

All this is in addition to rolling out a profit-motivated plan called Vancity 2.0 and raising banking fees – as if BC residents haven’t suffered enough financially! 

Workers worry all of these actions could signal a larger shift in Vancity’s values, moving it away from a progressive, community-focused co-op closer to a corporate bank. How long before Vancity completely loses its way and becomes another TD or BMO? 

Email the Vancity Board before it’s too late. Help us hold them accountable to their members and values, starting with progressive employee relations, so we can avoid a strike! Tell them you are worried that they might be losing their way but there’s still time to change course.
